To keep you guys updated on what I’ve been doing that has been keeping me away from writing posts, I’ll give you an overview.
If you guys have read my post, HB 1804, you should because what I’ve been doing is revolved around that bill. On Facebook, my friends and I have been forming a coalition with people in Oklahoma and in Texas who want to try and help reverse the bill. Some LULAC members in Texas saw what we were doing and immediately got into contact with us. They are 100% behind everything they do and they want to help us. They even drove all the way from Texas to OKC to meet with us.
Long story short, OU, OSU and their branches, will be founding LULAC councils here in Oklahoma. This would be the first time ever in Oklahoma that there would be actual LULAC councils in the college level. There have been attempts before but there was never enough support.
If you don’t know what LULAC is, it is the League of United Latin American Citizens. “The Mission of the League of United Latin American Citizens is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United State.” This organization is not just open to hispanics either, there are many non-hispanic members that volunteer their time and talents to the organization.
Ever since this bill was passed on Nov. 1st, I’ve had this very interesting turn-around. I’ve realized that we really do have a powerful voice. Over the years, I have seen many people protest for this, or march for that and it never seemed like they accomplished much of anything. I’ve always had the impression that there wasn’t power in the people because most don’t actually take the initiative to do anything. After talking with the LULAC members I realized that there is so much power and more in numbers. You really can make a difference.
If you feel that something is wrong politically in your community, make the initiative to make change. You give others so much hope and drive when you yourself are driven to make change. It doesn’t matter what it is, with persistence you can do anything. This country is as much yours as it is mine and if you have problems with something, say it, LOUDLY. Make an impact on people. There are people in other countries that can’t do anything of what we do so accept your duty as a citizen to speak up.
Faces of the Present. Youth of America.
Just remember, pass it on.
